What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions, achievements, and resilience of Black individuals throughout history.
Observed every February in the U.S. and Canada, it highlights the struggles and successes of African Americans while encouraging education and reflection.
This month-long celebration is a powerful way to acknowledge the role Black individuals have played in shaping society.
A Short History of Black History Month
The idea of dedicating a month to Black history originated with historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926.
He established "Negro History Week" to recognize the accomplishments of Black people that were often overlooked.
In 1976, the week expanded into Black History Month, celebrated each February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
It has since become a cornerstone of cultural education and a platform for honoring the legacy of Black leaders, inventors, artists, and activists.
